Software deployment Devops platform for DevOps Circle Internet Services Inc. today announced the closure of a late-stage $56 million funding round.
The Series D round was led by Owl Rock Capital Partners and Next Equity.
Founded in 2011, CircleCI uses intelligent automation and delivery tools to give enterprise DevOps platforms and teams an advantage when it comes to building, testing, deploying and integrating new software.
“Our accelerated pace of change over the last 18 months reflects our industry as a whole: Software development is increasingly complex, fragmented and difficult to map,” said Chief Executive Jim Rose.
With CircleCI’s platform, it’s possible to interconnect the entire life cycle of software development from idea to delivery, including the tools used as part of that work. The platform acts as a tool-agnostic ecosystem, so companies can implement continuous integration and delivery models even with custom tools in their own workflow.

Since announcing a Series C in January 2018, CircleCI has seen a great deal of growth. The company has opened its first international office in Tokyo and with this new funding plans to extend into markets in Japan and Europe.
The team has grown to 250 employees from 120, and more than 50 are expected to be hired on before the end of 2019. The monthly software job count run by CircleCI has also jumped to over 30 million, up from 7 million in January 2018.
In an interview, Rose told SiliconANGLE that he believes that the trend of digital transformation is still changing how businesses do software development, and he said platforms such as CircleCI are already a big part of that transformation.
“Businesses are realizing that software, and applications, are the primary interface between themselves and their customers and partners,” said Rose. “To do that, businesses have realized they need to sign on with continuous delivery and integration.”
To keep up with this need, Rose explained that CircleCI intends to spend much of its new funding on remaining “laser-focused” on continuous integration and delivery as provided by its platform. The company will also continue to push its tool-agnostic approach and extensibility to make sure that any DevOps team can connect their favorite or in-house tools to the platform with as little pain as possible.
This funding round raises the total amount raised by CircleCI to $115.5 million. It was also joined by existing investors Scale Venture Partners, Top Tier Capital, Threshold Ventures (formerly DFJ), Baseline Ventures, Industry Ventures and Heavybit.
